The 1980s are calling and they want you to have your Belay Bag back! Except, it has been updated and ready for the new generation of adventurers!
The Diamond Brand Gear Company has been making camping gear and tents here in the USA since 1881. The Belay Bag was originally designed in the 1980’s. The Belay bag pays homage to the classic Diamond Brand design and is sure to impress with its simplicity and yet technical features.
Outside Features
The Belay Bag is a 22-liter daypack with two front pockets big enough to store a 32-ounce growler or water bottle. There is no hydration integration so these pockets are perfect for carrying your liquids of choice.
The Belay Bag is unique in its adjustable and removable straps. The shoulder straps are removable by undoing the snaps at the bottom. This allows you to attach one shoulder strap to the pack and carry it like a messenger bag. If you prefer a more traditional backpack option, chest straps and waist belts are available for purchase. The shoulder straps have firm foam for cushioning and a nice curve for comfort. They are available in regular or tall sizes to ensure the Belay Bag is ergonomically fit to your person.
The Belay Bag is constructed with a 3D spacer mesh for airflow and thermoregulation during activities and daily commuting. Tough nylon daisy chains on the shoulder straps and down the front of the bag generously gives you 22 places to hang extra gear, water bottles, hats, drink holder, knife, yoga mat, etc.
Favorite Back Pack Hack: I will switch out the zipper pulls for hair ties because I am always in need of one, or two.

Inside Features
With one large zippered compartment, the Belay Bag has a padded laptop pouch and a medium zippered pouch attached to the top. This pouch is not padded and would be best for smaller items like wallets, keys, chapstick, etc.
The main compartment unzips in almost fully to expose the contents. This is ideal for flights as you can open the bag while it is still safely stored under the seat in front of you. The interior can easily hold a weekend’s worth of clothing or use it to carry your beach essentials just in case your luggage gets lost in tight connections.
Don’t feel like carrying the Belay Bag through the airport? Simply detach the shoulder straps, store them in the main compartment or front pockets and check it.
There is also a small pocket in one of the larger front pockets that can be used to hold a wine opener, map, flask, etc. If traveling, I wouldn’t store any valuables in this pocket for fear of the bag being slashed or unzipped while in crowds of people. Both interior pockets are made from upcycled materials from tent productions.
Final Thoughts
The Belay Bag is a sturdy daypack for the novice to experienced explorer. However, it can easily be used for ‘softer’ traveling like picnics, or as a school bag. The Belay Bag’s versatility allows you to make the Belay into the bag you need it to be. With the durable hardware and multiple attachment points, this bag can last you many years to come.
We recommend the Belay Bag for children 10 years and up and adults of all ages.
The Belay Bag is available in 5 colors. We have the timeless Maroon and Moss color-way. Kids will love the Marigold and Navy. Parents will love this louder color because you will be able to see it on the trail or tucked up against a tree.
The Belay Bag retails for $139.00 both on the Diamond Brand Gear website and Amazon.com.
