Our Top 3 Trails in the Carolina Mountains Right Now
We’re lucky to call the Carolina Mountains home. Here in WNC, we’re spoiled with an abundance of outdoor recreation: from paddling down the French Broad to cruising down the Blue Ridge Parkway. And, of course, access to a ton of awesome hiking and biking trails. From kid- to bike-friendly, here are our 3 favorites (at least until we discover a new one!).
Family-friendly: Bearwallow Mountain
Looking for something to do with the kids? Bearwallow Mountain offers easy terrain with rewarding views. Take a short, comfortable trail to an open, grassy summit where you’ll be greeted not only by miles of scenery (Mount Mitchell, Mount Pisgah, and the Balsams are visible from the top), but also by a fairly aloof herd of cattle. The ample space and picturesque views make it a popular spot for picnics and sunsets. But, despite its name, bear sightings (and wallowing!) are rare.

Biking: Bent Creek
WNC is a mountain biking hub, and Bent Creek Experimental Forest is perhaps the most popular mountain bike destination in the area. With 30 miles of single track, the experimental forest has something for all abilities and riding styles. Beginner riders can handle many of the re-graded and well-maintained trails, while experienced riders will enjoy the big climbs and technical sections. And with an on-site lodge and lots of recreation (from hiking and camping to swimming and fishing), Bent Creek is the perfect spot for your next weekend outing.
Waterfall: High Falls
Forget what TLC said and do go chasing waterfalls! The tallest waterfall in DuPont State Forest, High Falls is a towering 150 feet. And when the water is low, you can even rock hop across the river bank. Looking for a short hike? Stick to the 1.2-mile roundtrip from the High Falls Visitor Center parking area. Up to a bigger challenge? Make it a 3-mile hike to spot 3 waterfalls or a 7-mile hike to see 7!
